Semi Auto Shotguns Buying Guide

Purchase semi auto shotguns at Loftus Firearms and find a fast-cycling, soft-shooting platform built for high-volume waterfowl hunting, competitive clay target shooting, and everything in between. Gas-operated and inertia-driven semi-autos deliver faster follow-up shots and noticeably reduced felt recoil compared to pump actions, making them a top choice for hunters and competitors who spend long days behind the trigger.

Set up your semi auto shotgun right at Loftus Firearms with these related categories:

  • Pump action shotguns: Compare the semi-auto’s cycling speed and softer recoil against the pump action’s mechanical simplicity and load versatility to find the right platform for your hunting or defensive needs.
  • Over under shotguns: Explore over/under configurations for sporting clays and upland hunting, where a balanced double-barrel and refined trigger pull complement a semi-auto collection for different shooting disciplines.
  • Shotgun chokes: Dial in your semi-auto’s pattern for any application with the right choke, from an open cylinder for close-range defensive use to modified and full chokes for waterfowl and turkey hunting.
  • Shotgun barrels: Swap barrels on compatible semi-auto platforms to cover multiple roles, from a long field barrel for waterfowl and upland hunting to a shorter barrel configured for home defense.
  • Gun scopes: Add a slug gun scope to a rifled barrel semi-auto for accurate deer hunting at extended distances during Iowa’s firearm deer season.
  • Red dot sights: Mount a red dot on your semi-auto for fast, precise target acquisition in turkey hunting setups, home defense configurations, and three-gun competition builds.

Local And Compliance Notes

Loftus Firearms is the go-to destination for shotgun hunters and shooters in Evansdale, Iowa, and serves customers in the nearby cities of Waterloo, Cedar Falls, Hudson, Dunkerton, and Jesup. Iowa enacted constitutional carry in 2021 under Senate File 535, allowing law-abiding residents who are legally permitted to possess a firearm to carry openly or concealed without a state-issued permit. Residents seeking reciprocity recognition in other states can obtain an Iowa Permit to Carry Weapons through their county sheriff’s office.

All semi auto shotgun purchases at Loftus Firearms are conducted in full compliance with federal law, including ATF Form 4473 and a NICS background check for every sale. Buyers must be at least 18 years of age to purchase a shotgun from a licensed dealer and must meet all applicable federal and Iowa state eligibility requirements. Iowa imposes no state-level waiting period beyond the federal background check process. Semi-automatic shotguns configured as short-barreled shotguns, with a barrel under 18 inches or an overall length under 26 inches, are regulated under the National Firearms Act and require ATF registration, a $200 tax stamp, and approval prior to transfer. Loftus Firearms can assist customers through the NFA process for any regulated configurations.

Iowa waterfowl hunters should note that federal law requires non-toxic shot for all migratory bird hunting, and many semi-auto platforms require a choke rated for steel shot to avoid barrel damage. Always consult the Iowa DNR for current season dates, zone rules, and non-toxic shot requirements before heading afield. Transport your semi auto shotgun unloaded and cased in accordance with Iowa law, and store it securely at home to prevent unauthorized access.
