Buying suppressors in Iowa just got a lot easier. On October 9, 2026, the ATF announced it will no longer enforce the NFA’s approval, registration, and tax-stamp requirements for suppressors. That means the old Form 4 process, with its fingerprint cards and months-long wait for ATF approval, is no longer required. At Loftus Firearms in Hudson, you can fill out the paperwork, clear the background check, and take your suppressor home the same day.
How to Buy Suppressors in Iowa Now
Here is what a suppressor purchase looks like at Loftus Firearms:
- Fill out ATF Form 4473. This is the same federal form you complete for any firearm purchase.
- Pass a NICS background check. If you qualify for an exemption, such as a valid Iowa permit that the shop can accept in place of the check, ask us when you come in.
- Take it home the same day. No tax stamp, no Form 4, no waiting on ATF approval.
Bring a valid government-issued photo ID, and if you hold an Iowa Permit to Carry or Permit to Acquire, bring that too.
What Changed for Suppressors in Iowa
Two things happened this year:
- The $200 tax is gone. Congress set the NFA tax on suppressors to $0 effective January 1, 2026.
- ATF stopped enforcing the approval and registration rules. After a federal court in Silencer Shop Foundation v. ATF ruled in August that those requirements no longer held up for $0-tax items, the Department of Justice did not appeal. ATF then applied the change to everyone, effective October 9, 2026.
Suppressors are now handled much like any other firearm under federal law: a Form 4473 and a background check at a licensed dealer. Registration with ATF is optional. Federal rules still apply, and so do Iowa laws.
Is This Permanent? What to Know Before You Buy
This is an ATF enforcement policy, not a repeal of the NFA. It could change if Congress reinstates a tax, a court rules differently, or ATF withdraws the guidance. We’ll update this page if anything changes. If you’re thinking about buying, now is a good time to do it.
If you plan to travel with your suppressor, check the laws of every state on your route. Several states ban suppressors outright, and it’s unclear how federal safe-passage protection applies to unregistered items.
Suppressors in Iowa: Frequently Asked Questions
Do I still need a Form 4 to buy a suppressor in Iowa?
Not under current ATF policy. You complete a Form 4473 and a background check at the shop instead.
Do I need to pay the $200 tax stamp?
No. The tax on suppressors is $0, and ATF is no longer enforcing the stamp and approval process.
Can I really take it home the same day?
Yes, once your paperwork is complete and your background check clears or you qualify for an exemption.
Do I have to register my suppressor?
No, registration is optional. If you want to register voluntarily, tell us at the time of purchase.
Can I use my Iowa Permit to Carry?
Ask us when you come in. A qualifying Iowa permit can stand in for the NICS check at the time of purchase, and we’ll confirm your permit is valid.
What if the policy changes?
